Carpenter Bee Control - FAQ's
What Are Carpenter Bees?
Carpenter bees are not a major pest across much of the UK yet every year we are called to help people in Bristol and North Somerset who have very large populations of bees buzzing around old timbers outside homes.
The main thing to remember is that these insects are making the most of damage already caused by wood boring beetles. They simply enlarge the existing holes and in doing so create chambers that are ideal for the developing young. Some continental species like the giant purple carpenter bee have become established in some places in the southern half of the country and can cause considerable damage in affected structural timbers.
Many timbers associated with buildings are not required for the buildings over all structural integrity, however it is still important to ensure that if wood has already been attacked by wood boring beetles and this has allowed the ingress of fungi and rot, then carpenter bees are going to make things much worse over time.
Our advice is to simply replace affected timbers before they become home to carpenter bees or before carpenter bees are active - during the autumn and winter, thus ensuring the bees remain safe from pesticides. If you find you have a significant problem then the only thing you can realistically do is treat the timbers and the bees.
Can Carpenter Bees Sting?
We have not heard of any reports of people being stung by carpenter bees, but they do posses a sting so it is possible however unlikely.
Are Carpenter Bees Protected By Law?
No - but in our opinion, control of bees should be tightly regulated.
What Are Some Carpenter Bees Killed?
Not everyone loves bees and those who suffer both phobias and Anaphylactic shock from bee stings including adults and young children need to be protected. What we have come to realise is that if we do not control the final bees safely and sensitively there are plenty of chemicals amateurs can buy to kill the bees themselves at great risk to others, and often contaminating surrounding bees, causing untold damage to the local areas bee and insect populations.

Getting rid of Carpet Moths and other insects like ants, fleas and bedbugs is not as simple as many pesticide manufacturers will lead you to believe. The chemicals or poisons on offer in supermarkets and shops often have a fraction of the effect that is achieved through professional products and this means you are likely to get through many cans of treatment without actually achieving full control. As the only Bristol pest control company offering a dedicated insect control service we are able to deliver pest control treatments that are often guaranteed to work.
Pest control is all about understanding the pest you are trying to eliminate or prevent. The Wasp for example creates a wasp nest early in the year so if you wanted to control wasps in Bristol you would probably guess that checking for a new wasp nest in your loft in April and May would allow you to remove a wasp nest safely before it became too large. By understanding your pest, you are able to plan control in advance, before infestation occurs and the cost of elimination becomes high.
